About the Dacia Spring
The Dacia Spring holds a unique position in the EV market as one of the cheapest electric cars you can buy in Europe. It is designed unashamedly as an affordable urban runabout, and everything about it reflects that mission — from the small 24 kWh battery to the modest 65 bhp motor.
With a WLTP range of around 143 miles and a real-world range closer to 100–120 miles, the Spring is not a car for long motorway journeys. Its DC charging capability is limited to just 30 kW, meaning even a 10-to-80% fast charge takes around 45 minutes. However, the tiny battery means a full overnight charge on a 7 kW home wallbox takes only about 4 hours.
What the Spring does well is provide genuinely cheap electric motoring. Running costs are minimal, and the purchase price undercuts virtually every other new EV by a significant margin. The refreshed 2024 model brought improved styling, a better interior with a 10-inch touchscreen, and a slightly more powerful motor.
The trade-offs are real: the ride is basic, refinement is poor at motorway speeds, the cabin uses hard plastics throughout, and safety equipment is minimal (the original scored just one Euro NCAP star, though the facelift improved this). But as a second car for urban commuting, the Spring makes a compelling case for affordable electrification.
What the press thinks
The Spring divides opinion. Reviewers appreciate its honesty and affordability — it makes EV ownership accessible for budget-conscious buyers. However, the extremely slow DC charging, limited range, basic safety kit, and crude driving experience mean it only works as a dedicated city car.
