About the Hyundai IONIQ 9

The Hyundai IONIQ 9 is the Korean brand's largest and most ambitious electric vehicle to date. Built on the 800V E-GMP platform shared with the IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6, this three-row SUV is designed to compete with the likes of the Kia EV9, BMW iX, and Mercedes EQS SUV. At over five metres long, it offers genuine seven-seat practicality with a flat floor and generous third-row legroom.

A 110.3 kWh battery (approximately 106 kWh usable) powers the IONIQ 9, available in rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations. The RWD Long Range achieves up to 362 miles WLTP, while the AWD Performance variant trades some range for a quicker 0–62 mph time. Thanks to the 800V architecture, DC charging peaks at an impressive 350 kW, enabling a 10–80% charge in as little as 24 minutes — remarkable for such a large battery.

Inside, the cabin is spacious and lounge-like, with swivelling front seats in some trims, a panoramic roof, and Hyundai's dual-screen curved display. Third-row seats are genuinely usable for adults, making this a credible seven-seater. Build quality feels premium throughout.

The IONIQ 9 is a statement of Hyundai's EV intent — a large, fast-charging, long-range electric SUV at a price that undercuts European luxury rivals significantly.

What the press thinks

Reviewers are impressed by the IONIQ 9's vast interior, ultra-fast charging, and competitive pricing. Third-row usability is highlighted as genuinely practical. The ride is comfortable but the sheer size makes it cumbersome in urban settings. Some find the RWD base model's acceleration leisurely for the price.
