About the BYD Sealion 7

The BYD Sealion 7 is BYD's direct challenger to the Tesla Model Y, positioned as a mid-size electric SUV with competitive pricing, strong range, and the brand's proven Blade Battery technology. It arrives in Europe and other markets as BYD continues its aggressive global expansion.

Using BYD's LFP (lithium iron phosphate) Blade Battery in either 82.5 kWh or 91.3 kWh configurations, the Sealion 7 offers a WLTP range of up to 323 miles. The Blade Battery's cell-to-pack design is renowned for its safety — BYD famously demonstrated it withstanding a nail penetration test without catching fire. LFP chemistry also means the battery can be charged to 100% daily without accelerating degradation.

DC charging peaks at 230 kW, delivering a 10-to-80% charge in around 24 minutes. This is a significant step up from earlier BYD models and makes the Sealion 7 competitive with the best in the segment. The interior features BYD's rotating 15.6-inch central screen and a driver display, with a clean, minimalist design.

Available in rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations, the Sealion 7 offers a comfortable ride with well-judged suspension tuning. Build quality has improved markedly over earlier BYD models, and the pricing — typically undercutting the Model Y — makes it an increasingly popular choice.

What the press thinks

Early reviews position the Sealion 7 as a serious Tesla Model Y alternative. The Blade Battery's safety credentials and LFP longevity are praised, along with competitive pricing and improved charging speed. Critics note the infotainment software still lags behind Tesla's, and the brand lacks an established charging network.
