About the Geely EX5
The Geely EX5 is the first vehicle from Geely's own brand to arrive in European and Australian markets, marking a new chapter for the Chinese automotive giant that also owns Volvo, Polestar, and Lotus. It is a mid-size electric SUV competing directly with the Tesla Model Y and Hyundai Ioniq 5 at a significantly lower price point.
Using Geely's proprietary Aegis Short Blade battery technology with LFP chemistry and a 60.2 kWh capacity, the EX5 offers up to 267 miles of WLTP range. The LFP battery can be charged to 100% daily without accelerating degradation. DC charging at up to 160 kW delivers a 10-to-80% charge in around 28 minutes, which is competitive for its price bracket.
The EX5 rides on Geely's SEA platform, the same architecture underpinning several Volvo and Polestar models. Build quality is reasonable, and the interior features a clean design with a central touchscreen. However, early reviews note that the infotainment software and low-speed power delivery still lag behind established European and Korean rivals.
At its aggressive launch pricing, the EX5 represents strong value and benefits from its connection to the wider Geely-Volvo engineering ecosystem. Whether the brand can build the trust and aftersales network needed to compete long-term remains the key question.
What the press thinks
The EX5 impresses on value and range for the price. Reviewers appreciate the LFP battery's durability and the solid platform shared with Volvo. However, the infotainment software, sluggish low-speed throttle response, and the challenge of an unknown brand in Western markets are consistently cited as weaknesses.
