About the Kia e-Niro

The Kia e-Niro was one of the breakthrough EVs that proved electric cars could be practical, affordable, and genuinely usable for everyday life. Available in 39.2 kWh and 64 kWh battery variants, it offered up to 282 miles of WLTP range in the larger-battery version — a figure that embarrassed many more expensive rivals when it launched.

Built on a modified version of the Niro crossover platform, the e-Niro delivered a comfortable ride, a spacious interior, and Kia's excellent 7-year warranty. The 64 kWh variant's real-world range of around 220-250 miles was enough for most journeys, and the active liquid cooling system helped preserve battery health over time.

DC charging topped out at 77 kW, which was competitive when the car launched but feels slow now. A 10-to-80% charge took around 43 minutes. The smaller 39.2 kWh battery was less popular due to its limited 180-mile WLTP range, though it suited buyers with shorter commutes.

Production of the original e-Niro ended in 2022, replaced by the second-generation Niro EV. On the used market, the e-Niro represents excellent value — particularly the 64 kWh version, which combines strong range, liquid-cooled battery longevity, and Kia's generous warranty coverage. It was a pivotal car in making EVs mainstream.

What the press thinks

The e-Niro was widely praised as one of the best-value EVs of its generation. The 64 kWh version's range impressed reviewers, as did Kia's 7-year warranty. The main criticisms were the slow DC charging by current standards and the unexciting driving dynamics — though most considered these acceptable trade-offs for the price.
