About the Kia EV9
The Kia EV9 is a full-size three-row electric SUV that finally gives families a genuine alternative to petrol-powered seven-seaters. Built on Hyundai-Kia's 800-volt E-GMP platform, it charges from 10–80% in around 24 minutes — remarkable for a vehicle this size.
The interior is the real star. Second-row seats swivel to face rearwards in 'lounge mode', and even the third row is genuinely usable for adults. Materials quality is high, with a minimalist dashboard dominated by a triple-screen setup. The 99.8 kWh battery delivers up to 349 miles WLTP, though 240–300 miles is more realistic.
It competes with the likes of the Mercedes EQB (though it's much larger), the Tesla Model X, and the BMW iX. The EV9 undercuts all of them while offering more interior space. It won World Car of the Year 2024 and is one of the most accomplished EVs on sale.
What the press thinks
A game-changer for families wanting a large EV. Reviewers praise the cavernous interior, 800V fast charging, and striking design. Criticisms include the hefty weight affecting handling, firm ride on larger wheels, and energy consumption in cold weather.
