About the Smart #1
The Smart #1 marks a complete reinvention of the Smart brand. Gone are the tiny city cars — this is a compact electric SUV developed through a joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and Chinese manufacturer Geely. Built on Geely's SEA platform in China, it is a far more ambitious product than anything Smart has made before.
Available with either a 47 kWh or 62 kWh battery, the larger pack delivers a WLTP range of up to 305 miles, which is impressive for a car of this size. DC charging peaks at 150 kW, enabling a 10-to-80% top-up in around 30 minutes. Notably, the Smart #1 supports 22 kW AC charging as standard, which is faster than many rivals on three-phase supplies.
Inside, the cabin is modern and tech-forward with a large 12.8-inch central screen running a Snapdragon-powered infotainment system. The interior space is surprisingly generous for the car's compact exterior footprint, with a flat floor and decent rear legroom. The BRABUS performance variant adds dual motors, AWD, and 422 bhp for a 3.9-second 0–62 mph sprint.
Pricing sits between the MG4 and Volvo EX30, making it competitive though not the cheapest option. Build quality has been well received, though some reviewers note the brand may struggle with residual values and perception.
What the press thinks
The Smart #1 has surprised reviewers with its spacious interior, generous equipment, and strong range. The 22 kW AC charging is a standout feature. Concerns centre on long-term brand perception, the lack of a physical charging network, and the fact that it competes in an increasingly crowded segment.
