About the Subaru Solterra

The Subaru Solterra is the brand's first pure electric vehicle, co-developed with Toyota as a twin to the bZ4X. True to Subaru's heritage, AWD is standard across the range, and the Solterra includes Subaru's X-MODE off-road system — a first for an EV — with selectable terrain modes for snow, dirt, and mud.

Built on the e-TNGA platform, the Solterra uses a 64 kWh battery shared with its Toyota sibling, offering a WLTP range of up to 258 miles and real-world range of 180–215 miles. DC charging peaks at 150 kW, delivering a 10-to-80% charge in around 30 minutes. The onboard AC charger is limited to 6.6 kW in most markets, which is slower than many competitors.

The dual-motor AWD system provides genuine capability in adverse conditions. The X-MODE system and the Solterra's 210 mm ground clearance make it more trail-capable than most electric SUVs. It is not a hardcore off-roader, but it handles unpaved roads, snow, and muddy tracks better than almost any other EV in its class.

The interior is functional rather than luxurious, with a 12.3-inch touchscreen and Subaru's latest EyeSight driver assistance system. Build quality is solid, and the driving experience is stable and confidence-inspiring. However, the range lags behind newer competitors, and Subaru's dealer network for EVs is still developing in some markets.

What the press thinks

Reviewers highlight the Solterra's genuine AWD capability and X-MODE as differentiators in the EV space. The ride quality and standard safety features earn praise. However, the limited range, slow AC charging, and bland interior hold it back against more modern rivals.
