About the Alpine A290
The Alpine A290 is the performance-oriented sibling of the Renault 5 E-Tech, and Alpine's first step in becoming an all-electric sports brand. It uses the same AmpR Small platform and 52 kWh NMC battery, but gains a significantly more powerful motor producing up to 218 bhp — a substantial uplift over the standard Renault 5.
Alpine's chassis engineers have fitted Brembo brakes, Michelin Pilot Sport tyres, and a stiffer suspension tune with 10 mm lower ride height. The result is a hot hatch that feels agile and playful, keeping weight below 1,500 kg despite the battery pack. The 0–62 mph sprint takes around 6.4 seconds.
DC charging at up to 100 kW enables a 10–80% top-up in about 30 minutes, and the WLTP range of up to 236 miles is competitive for the segment. Inside, Alpine-specific sports seats and a dedicated driving mode selector with Overtake functionality add genuine character. It's a credible electric alternative to the GR Yaris and Mini Cooper S generation.
What the press thinks
Press consensus is enthusiastic — the A290 is widely regarded as one of the most engaging small electric cars yet made. Reviewers highlight the sharp handling, punchy acceleration, and genuine hot hatch feel. Reservations centre on the 100 kW charging cap and the price premium over the Renault 5.
