i5 estimated average
These curves are aggregated, owner-reported degradation data — not official manufacturer figures. Your own result above is the number that matters.
Wh/mi or Wh/km
Swipe left on the curved display to the "Efficiency" widget — tap it for a bar chart showing kWh/100 km split by Climate, Drivetrain and Auxiliaries. Or go to "My Car" → "Trip Info" for average consumption per trip. On the i3, use the iDrive controller: "Vehicle Info" → "Trip Computer" → "Consumption".
Estimated Range
Always shown in the instrument cluster next to the battery gauge. On iDrive 8+ models you can also tap the battery icon on the home screen for a range map adjusted to terrain and driving style.
Battery Percentage
Visible in the instrument cluster beside the battery gauge. Tap the battery icon on the home screen for exact percentage and charging status. If you see range instead of %, go to "My Car" → "Settings" → "Units" and switch to percentage.

About the BMW i5
The BMW i5 is the electric version of the eighth-generation 5 Series and arguably one of BMW's most important EVs. Available as both a saloon and Touring (estate), it offers something that many electric competitors cannot — a premium estate car with genuine long-distance capability. The 81.2 kWh battery provides up to 362 miles WLTP range in the eDrive40 saloon.
DC charging at up to 205 kW means a 10-80% stop takes around 30 minutes, making motorway road trips practical. The active liquid cooling system ensures consistent charging performance and protects long-term battery health. The i5 shares its flexible CLAR platform with the combustion 5 Series, which means the packaging isn't quite as space-efficient as a dedicated EV platform, but the boot remains generously sized.
The eDrive40 rear-wheel-drive model focuses on efficiency and range, while the M60 xDrive variant adds all-wheel drive and 601 bhp for serious performance. Both benefit from BMW's refined chassis tuning, adaptive suspension, and the latest iDrive system. Build quality is excellent, and the cabin feels every bit the premium executive car.
It competes directly with the Mercedes EQE, Tesla Model S, and Audi A6 e-tron — and holds its own against all of them.
What the press thinks
The i5 is widely regarded as one of the best electric executive cars available. The Touring variant is particularly praised for offering a genuinely practical electric estate. Main criticisms include the weight penalty over combustion 5 Series models and a slightly firm ride on sport suspension.
