About the Ford Explorer

The Ford Explorer is not the body-on-frame truck Americans know — this is a European-market electric SUV built on Volkswagen's MEB platform as part of a technical partnership between the two manufacturers. Underneath, it shares its battery, motors, and basic architecture with the VW ID.4, but Ford has applied its own exterior design, interior treatment, and infotainment system to create a distinct product.

Available with a 77 kWh battery in rear-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive configurations, the Explorer offers up to 374 miles of WLTP range in its most efficient guise. DC charging peaks at 185 kW, comfortably outpacing the ID.4's 170 kW ceiling and allowing a 10–80% charge in around 26 minutes.

Ford's interior is arguably more successful than VW's much-criticised ID.4 cabin. There is a large central touchscreen running Ford's SYNC Move system, which can slide left and right to reveal a storage tray. Physical buttons for climate control address one of the ID.4's biggest complaints. Boot space is generous at 536 litres, and rear-seat room is good for a mid-size SUV.

It competes with the VW ID.4, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Tesla Model Y, and Skoda Enyaq. For buyers who want MEB efficiency with a more conventional, user-friendly interior, the Ford Explorer is a strong choice.

What the press thinks

Critics note the Explorer's improved interior over its VW ID.4 cousin, praising the physical controls and sliding screen. Range and charging are competitive. Some find the ride slightly firm and the driving dynamics unremarkable.
