About the Honda e:Ny1
The Honda e:Ny1 is Honda's first mainstream electric SUV in Europe, replacing the quirky but impractical Honda e with something far more conventional. Built on a platform shared with the Chinese-market Honda e:NS1, it pairs a 68.8 kWh battery with a single front motor producing 204 bhp.
With up to 256 miles of WLTP range and real-world figures of around 190-220 miles, the e:Ny1 is far more practical than the Honda e it replaced. The compact SUV body offers a raised driving position and a usable boot, making it a credible family car. Honda's build quality and reliability reputation carry over, and the interior is well assembled with quality materials.
The main weakness is DC charging speed. At just 78 kW maximum, it is significantly slower than rivals like the Hyundai Kona Electric (102 kW) and far behind the best in class. A 10-to-80% fast charge takes around 45 minutes, which makes longer journeys less convenient. AC charging at 11 kW is more competitive.
The driving experience is pleasant if unremarkable — comfortable, quiet, and easy to manoeuvre, but lacking the character of the Honda e or the engagement of sportier rivals. For Honda loyalists wanting to go electric, the e:Ny1 is a solid if unspectacular choice that does the basics well but fails to stand out in an increasingly competitive segment.
What the press thinks
The e:Ny1 earns respect for Honda's build quality and a comfortable driving experience, but reviewers consistently flag the slow DC charging as a significant drawback. The conservative styling and limited feature set compared to Korean rivals are also noted. It is seen as a safe choice rather than an exciting one.
