About the Lexus RZ
The Lexus RZ 450e is the brand's first dedicated electric vehicle, built on Toyota's e-TNGA platform shared with the Toyota bZ4X and Subaru Solterra. As a Lexus, it brings a more luxurious treatment to that platform with higher-quality materials, better sound insulation, and a more refined driving experience.
The 64 kWh battery delivers a WLTP range of up to 280 miles, though real-world range is closer to 195–235 miles. DC charging peaks at 150 kW, which is adequate but not class-leading — a 10-to-80% charge takes around 30 minutes. The dual-motor AWD layout is standard, using Toyota's Direct4 system that intelligently distributes torque between the front and rear axles.
The RZ's most notable feature is the optional One Motion Grip steer-by-wire system, which replaces the traditional steering column with an aircraft-style yoke. There is no physical connection between the steering input and the wheels — instead, electronic actuators translate the driver's inputs. It is divisive but technically fascinating.
Inside, the RZ is quintessentially Lexus — quiet, comfortable, and impeccably finished. The 14-inch touchscreen is a significant improvement over previous Lexus infotainment systems. However, the range and charging speed fall behind newer rivals like the BMW iX1 and Genesis GV60, and the e-TNGA platform is beginning to show its age.
What the press thinks
The RZ earns praise for its refined cabin, build quality, and the intriguing steer-by-wire technology. However, reviewers consistently flag the disappointing range, mediocre charging speed, and the fact that newer competitors on more modern platforms offer significantly more for the money.
