About the BMW i3s
The BMW i3s was the sportier version of BMW's pioneering i3 city car, distinguished by wider tyres, stiffer suspension, a 10 mm lower ride height, and a more powerful 184 bhp motor. The 'S' variant took an already distinctive car and added a sharper edge to its handling.
Using a 37.9 kWh NMC battery from Samsung SDI, the i3s offered a WLTP range of up to 177 miles — modest by today's standards but adequate for urban use when new. Notably, the i3 used passive air cooling for its battery rather than liquid cooling, which could affect degradation rates in hot climates or with frequent fast charging.
The carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) passenger cell kept weight remarkably low at 1,340 kg, giving the i3s a nimble, go-kart-like feel. Production ended in 2022, but the i3 remains historically significant as BMW's first mass-produced EV and a pioneering example of sustainable manufacturing.

The i3s was praised for its innovative construction, light weight, and zippy urban driving character. Critics noted the limited range, narrow rear tyres, and outdated infotainment even before production ended. It remains a fondly remembered pioneer that was ahead of its time in some ways and limited in others.
