About the BYD Dolphin Surf
The BYD Dolphin Surf is a compact electric hatchback aimed squarely at the affordable end of the market. Available with either a 30 kWh or 43.2 kWh Blade battery, it uses BYD's distinctive LFP (lithium iron phosphate) cell-to-pack technology, which offers excellent thermal stability and longevity even when regularly charged to 100%.
Positioned as a budget-friendly urban runabout, the Dolphin Surf competes with the Citroën ë-C3 and Dacia Spring on price while offering a more refined driving experience and better safety equipment. DC charging tops out at around 80 kW, which is modest but adequate given the smaller battery — a 10–80% top-up takes roughly 40 minutes.
The interior is surprisingly well-equipped for the price, with a rotating central touchscreen carried over from more expensive BYD models. It is not the most exciting EV on the road, but as a value proposition for city and suburban driving, it is hard to beat.
What the press thinks
Reviewers see the Dolphin Surf as one of the strongest budget EV options available. Its Blade battery and build quality punch above the price tag. Main criticisms focus on the modest DC charging speed and limited motorway range from the smaller battery.
