About the Hyundai INSTER

The Hyundai INSTER is one of the most anticipated affordable electric cars of 2025. Based on the Korean-market Casper, this small city car has been engineered from the ground up as an EV and represents Hyundai's push into the budget electric segment in Europe. Its retro-modern design, with round headlights and a boxy yet cute silhouette, gives it a distinctive personality that sets it apart from more conventional small EVs.

Two battery options are offered: a 42 kWh Standard Range and a 49 kWh Long Range, delivering 193 and 233 miles of WLTP range respectively. For a car this size and price, those figures are genuinely impressive. DC charging at up to 120 kW is also surprisingly quick, managing a 10–80% top-up in around 30 minutes.

Despite its compact footprint — roughly the same as a Fiat 500 — the INSTER is cleverly packaged with a flat EV floor, sliding rear seats, and a boot that ranges from 280 to 351 litres depending on rear-seat position. The cabin feels spacious for the segment and is equipped with a 10.25-inch dual-screen setup.

With pricing expected to start around the equivalent of 20,000 to 25,000 pounds, the INSTER could democratise electric car ownership in a way that few rivals have managed. It competes with the Dacia Spring, Citroen e-C3, and Fiat 500 Electric.

What the press thinks

Early reviews are enthusiastic about the INSTER's value proposition — impressive range, decent charging speed, and cheerful design at a budget price point. Interior quality is basic but acceptable, and the clever packaging makes it feel bigger than it looks. Some concern about motorway refinement at higher speeds.
